Why ship to the Netherlands

Why ship to Netherlands

The Netherlands is a key trader of goods to countries around the globe with a population of over 17.4 million. Many consumers in the country look to purchase from the UK, meaning there are big opportunities for UK sellers to expand their customer base and ship their goods abroad.

The Netherlands also operates major cargo ports, the port of Rotterdam is actually the largest seaport in Europe!

What to know when sending to the Netherlands

Shipping to the Netherlands is easy when you're in the know. Here are some key things to remember before booking your international parcel delivery.

Prohibited and restricted items

You must read the Prohibited and Restricted list before you book a delivery with us. Like any other country, the Netherlands has a list of items you can and can't send including works of art, pet food and fruit. Some couriers also have specific items they won't carry so it's best to filter the results by country and carrier.

It's important you check our list before you send to avoid potential shipping delays or confiscation at Customs.

Check the address is correct

The Netherlands' address format differs slightly to our system in the UK. It's very important you correctly address your parcels, otherwise it could lead to lost or misdelivered shipments.

At Interparcel we correctly format the address for you. All you need to do is enter the recipient's postcode and fill in the boxes accurately with the recipient's:

  • Full name
  • Company (preferable)
  • Telephone number
  • Email
  • Address line 1 (first line of address)
  • Address line 2 (necessary if line 1 is full)

The rest of the details will be pulled from the initial postcode you entered. We will then generate an address label which you must print and secure to the outside of your parcel.

Complete a commercial invoice

Packaging the parcel

When packaging goods to send to the Netherlands, or to any country, keep in mind that your package will be handled multiple times, loaded on and off different vehicles or aircraft and through different weather conditions. (Rain is common throughout the year) So, it's important you suitably package your parcel to avoid any damage.

We advise you:

  • Choose an appropriately-sized strong cardboard box (preferably double-lined)
  • Individually wrap each item to avoid movement
  • Protect the inside of the box with internal cushioning materials like bubble-wrap, packing peanuts and tissue paper
  • Seal the box with strong packing tape that can withstand all temperatures
  • Clearly attach relevant shipping labels to the outside of the box
