TNT Express

TNT Express celebrates its 70th Anniversary in 2016 having been founded as TNT (Thomas Nationwide Transport) by Ken Thomas in Australia in 1946. Ken originally started his road and rail freight services with just one truck and within 12 years was listed in the Sydney Stock exchange. TNT Express today delivers 1,000,000 parcels around the world each day, providing a door to door service to over 200 countries worldwide.

From its humble beginnings in 1946 TNT quickly grew in the 1950’s through acquisition, even having by this stage its own fleet of aircraft.

In 1967 TNT Merged with Altrans a privately owned Australian freight transporter, becoming TNT Ltd. This enabled TNT to trade for the first time overseas, initially branching out into New Zealand. This further paved the way to growth and led to achieving a presence in over 180 countries by the 1980s where the focus then became on European expansion.

In 1992 the company co founded GD Express Worldwide owning 50% with KPN, the Dutch national post & telecoms company, together with the postal companies of Canada, France, West Germany & Sweden who owned the remaining half. Following this, KPN bought TNT in 1996 and demerged from the telecoms business in 1998 to form TNT NV.

In 2006 The Logistics arm was sold and the focus was on the mail and Express services, until 2011 when TNT NV Split into two companies. This separated the mail services to form PostNL and branding the Express parcel services as TNT Express that we know today. This came at the time where TNT operated the largest air & road network in Europe.

In 2012 UPS attempted to acquire TNT Express in a deal worth $6.7Billion, but this fell through. Further interest to acquire was shown by FedEx in 2015 and it was confirmed they were successful on the 25th May 2016. FedEx, which generates more than six times TNT’s revenue stated in a recent press release ‘The €4.4 billion acquisition combines the strengths of the companies – the world’s largest air express network and an unparalleled European road network, which will expand the existing FedEx portfolio and reshape the global transportation and logistics industry.’

TNT Express “The People network” today employ over 56,000 people worldwide across 200 countries, run over 55,000 weekly journeys between their 72 European hubs and operate 54 air freighters taking over 700 journeys a week overseas. This ensures delivery of 1,000,000 consignments each day to their customers which generated revenue in 2015 of $6.91 billion.
