FedEx Express Surcharges

Avoid unexpected delivery charges by checking your parcel's weight, dimensions, packaging and address details carefully before booking. If the information you enter is accurate, applicable standard charges will already be included in the price shown.

Accurate parcel details help prevent additional charges

Weigh your parcel accurately, measure every side and use suitable packaging before completing your booking. FedEx may reweigh and remeasure parcels during transit. A surcharge may be applied if the parcel differs from the information provided when the booking was made or requires additional manual handling.

Surcharge guide

The table below explains the most common FedEx Express surcharges, when they may be applied and the minimum charge involved.

01 Additional handling - dimensions

02 Additional handling - packaging

A packaging surcharge may apply if the parcel:

  • Is not enclosed in corrugated fibreboard packaging, such as cardboard. This includes packaging made from metal, wood, canvas, leather, hard or soft plastic, or expanded polystyrene foam.
  • Has an outer shipping container covered in shrink wrap or stretch wrap.
  • Is round or cylindrical, including mailing tubes, cans, buckets, barrels, tyres, drums or pails.
  • Is bound with metal, plastic or cloth banding, or has wheels, castors, handles or straps.
  • Is loosely wrapped or has contents protruding outside the outer packaging.
  • Could become entangled in or damage other parcels or the FedEx sorting system.
  • Contains empty space that allows the contents to move, making the parcel unstable or top-heavy on a conveyor.

A parcel's shape and dimensions can change during transit. If this happens, FedEx may reassess its eligibility and adjust the shipment charges.

Fuel surcharge:
A fuel surcharge may also be applied to additional charges. Fuel is already included in the original price when the parcel details are entered correctly, but the applicable fuel rate can change weekly.

Please note:
These charges are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change. Additional charges not listed on this page may also be applied where relevant. All charges for domestic parcels are subject to VAT.

FedEx packaging advice

A few simple packaging choices can help your parcel move safely through the courier network.

01

Avoid cylindrical tubes

When sending rolled or long, thin items, use a triangular or rectangular tube instead. Cylindrical tubes can roll off conveyor belts and may require additional manual handling.

02

Do not use excessive tape

Secure the parcel properly, but avoid covering it in excessive tape. Heavily taped or irregular packaging may need to be handled manually and could incur an additional charge.

Customs information for international parcels

When placing an international order, complete all customs information accurately during the booking process.

If you include your own commercial invoice, the contents, descriptions, declared values and shipping costs must exactly match the information entered on the Interparcel website. Any discrepancies could result in delays or additional charges from customs authorities.

If customs charges are billed to Interparcel, the original parcel sender will be responsible for paying them. Please see Section 12 of our Terms of Use for further information.
