UKIM Codes

UKIMS Codes : What They Are and How to Use Them for GB – NI Trade

2nd April 2025, 1:01pm in Shipping Advice by Dan Jones

The UK Internal Market Scheme (UKIMS) is a government initiative that helps businesses move goods from Great Britain (GB) into Northern Ireland (NI) more smoothly. It allows approved traders to declare their goods as 'not at risk' of entering the European Union (EU), which means those goods won’t be subject to EU customs duties. This makes trade between GB and NI easier and more cost-effective.

If you're an individual sending personal or occasional parcels, you probably don’t need to worry about UKIMS. The scheme is mainly for businesses that move goods for commercial reasons between GB and NI.

It's also helpful to understand the difference between a UKIMS code and an EORI number. An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is used to identify businesses for customs processes. A UKIMS code, on the other hand, shows that a business is part of the UKIMS scheme. You need both to declare goods as 'not at risk' and benefit from the scheme.

Understanding UKIMS Codes

If your business doesn’t use the Trader Support Service (TSS), you’ll need to enter a few key codes in your customs declarations:

1. Document Code (DE 2/3):
Enter '1UKI' plus your UKIMS authorization number.

2. Importer Identification Number (DE 3/16): Use your EORI number linked to your UKIMS registration.

3. Authorisation Type Code (DE 3/39): Type 'UKIM' followed by your EORI number.

Getting these codes right is important. They make sure your goods are marked as 'not at risk', so you don’t pay unnecessary customs duties.

Benefits of Being Part of UKIMS

Joining UKIMS can bring your business a few key benefits:

No EU Customs Duties:
If your goods are 'not at risk', you won’t have to pay EU customs duties when moving them from GB to NI.

Easier Processes:
The scheme reduces paperwork and simplifies the customs process.

Trader Goods Profile:
Your business will have a profile listing your common goods, so you don’t need to enter commodity codes each time.

How to Apply for UKIMS

If you think UKIMS could help your business, here’s how to apply:

1. Check Eligibility:
Your business must be based in the UK and meet rules for record-keeping, compliance, and systems.

2. Apply Online:
Use the official government website to submit your application.
You’ll need to provide business details and show that you can track your goods properly.

3. Get Approved:
Once approved, you’ll receive a UKIMS authorization number to use in customs declarations.

Things to Keep in Mind

Be Accurate: Even if you’re authorized, you must declare goods properly as 'not at risk' to avoid extra charges.

Stay Compliant: Keep good records and follow all UKIMS rules to maintain your status in the scheme.
