Parcel packing guide
A clear do’s and don’ts guide to choosing a box, cushioning your contents, sealing securely and labelling your parcel for UK courier networks.
The golden rule
Courier parcels travel through depots, vehicles and automated sorting systems alongside other consignments. Your packaging should keep its shape, protect the contents from movement and leave a clear, scannable label on the outside.
Start strong
Use a rigid, good-quality outer package that can support the weight of parcels stacked above it. For most shipments, a double-wall corrugated cardboard box is the safest choice.
Unsuitable outer packaging
Stop movement
Allow around 3-5 cm between the contents and the box. Wrap items separately, keep them away from each other and fill every gap so the parcel feels snug, not crushed.
Do: use bubble wrap, foam inserts, air pillows or crumpled kraft paper to absorb impact.
Don’t: underfill a box so it collapses, or overfill it until the seams bulge or split.
Extra care
Wrap each item separately and consider a box-within-a-box. Handling stickers are advisory; strong packaging must provide the protection.
Use sealed, leak-proof inner containers, place them in a protective bag and add enough absorbent material for the full contents.
Keep every item apart with dividers or cushioning. No item should touch another item or the outer wall of the box.
Close every seam
Use wide, pressure-sensitive parcel tape. Apply it in an H pattern: cover the centre join and both edge seams across the top and bottom.
Do: reinforce heavy parcels and make sure every flap lies flat.
Don’t: use masking tape, cellophane tape, rope, string or loose straps.
Don’t: wrap the parcel so excessively that inspection and safe resealing become impossible.
Ready for collection
Remove old labels. Cover or remove every old barcode and address to prevent misrouting.
Apply the correct new label. Put it flat on the largest surface, never folded over a seam or edge.
Match multi-parcel labels. Each box needs the label assigned to it in your booking.
Add customs paperwork. For international services, attach the required commercial invoice in a document pouch as instructed.
Measure and weigh again. Use the final packed size and weight, including all wrapping, pouches and bulges.

Packing questions
First check that your item is accepted by your chosen service. Wrap each item separately, use a strong double-wall box and leave 3-5 cm of cushioning between the contents, each other and every side of the box. Fill all gaps so nothing moves when the parcel is gently shaken. A box-within-a-box can add protection for particularly delicate items.
These items are poor outer packaging: labels may not adhere, straps can catch in sorting equipment and the case may not be covered for damage. Put the item inside a suitably sized double-wall cardboard box whenever possible and check the packaging rules for your chosen service.
Triangular tubes do not roll on conveyor belts, are less likely to need manual handling and usually protect posters or plans more reliably. If you use a round tube, check that the selected courier accepts it and whether a handling charge applies.
Remove every old label and barcode, then attach the new label flat to the largest surface. Keep the whole barcode visible and do not fold the label over an edge or seam. Match the correct label to each parcel in a multi-parcel booking.
Measure and weigh only after the parcel is completely packed and sealed. Measure the longest points, including any bulges, and use the packed weight and dimensions when booking. Accurate details help prevent remeasurement charges, delays or collection problems.
They are advisory only. They do not replace a strong outer box and proper internal cushioning, and they may lead to manual handling on some services. Pack every parcel to withstand normal network handling even when a handling label is attached.
