Parcelforce is a trading name of Royal Mail Group Ltd, set up over 25 years ago as the parcel division of Royal Mail. Parcelforce today has 54 depots in the UK ranging from the very North of Scotland in Inverness to Plymouth in the South West and delivers to every address in the UK and 99.6% of the world's population utilising their International partners.
The Parcel Post service of Royal Mail was created back in 1883 to compliment services already supplied to Royal Mail by Red Star Parcels & British Road services. In 1990 the company was rebranded in its own right from Royal Mail Parcels to Parcelforce with investment in IT, together with the introduction of a National and International sorting hub. By 1998 the business was further rebranded to 'Parcelforce Worldwide' the well known brand we know today and the focus was now firming on the Express parcels market.
2012 saw an investment of £75 million in Parcelforce to span the next 4 years and by 2013 12 new & improved depots had been launched along with a new processing centre with industry leading technology.
Today the National hub covers 24,000 square metres and is a quarter of a mile in length, designed to handle 58,500 parcels per hour with full vehicles being unloaded every 45 seconds.
The International hub covers 12,500 square metres and is designed to handle 35,000 packages per day serving 240 countries worldwide.
It boasts overhead scanners, volumetric measuring technology, together with 'rapidscan' x ray machines and a dedicated inbound customs team to speed processing times.
Packages destined for Europe are delivered by a partner of Parcelforce, General Logistics Systems (GLS), who are a subsidiary of Royal Mail.
The North West Processing Centre covers 12,000 square metres and processes 35,000 parcels per day and covers 240 countries and territories worldwide. This site also boasts the same overhead scanners and dedicated Customs Team and despite its size still has more than enough room for expansion.
